About the car

The Chevrolet El Camino was a cult favorite car for street machiners until the last one was produced in 1987. The combination of V8 horsepower with the practicality of a cargo bed gave the El Camino a special place in American automotive history.

While the style fell out of favor in the United States as Americans shifted towards taller and bulkier pickup trucks, the Australians persisted with what they called ‘utes’ (short for utility). Local manufacturers Holden and Ford produced utes in great numbers. In the early 2000s the two companies were at war to produce the most powerful utes.

Ford produced its F6 Typhoon, coming with a turbocharged straight six that resulted in high-13s on the quarter-mile. Holden then responded by borrowing the LS2 engine from Chevrolet and throwing that into what it called the Holden SS ute, capable of times into the mid and even low 13s — equivalent performance to the Chevy Camaro of the same year.

In the mid-2000s, rumors circulated that Chevy was looking to import the Australian utes to be badged as El Caminos. From the information available, it came very close to happening, but the impact of the global financial crisis of 2008 likely scuttled the plans.

But now you can own a piece of history, a glimpse of the future that never was. You’ll get looks from every direction while driving this high horsepower ute — prepare to never be left alone at gas stations, drag strips or Cars and Coffee. You’ll get $5,000 in cash to go with the car too!
