For the 2026 edition of Sick Summer, we crowned champions in nineteen classes, including the new Motorcycle and Junior Street classes. The Long Way Home – The Great American Detour Gets Underway to Cover Over 3,000 Miles and Go Coast to Coast, as Robert Voss Leads the Pack to Become the Longest Drag and Drive Event on Distance!
Defining the term “street car” can get you opinions and discussions that can rival most debates on politics. And although most drag and drive events will start and end at the same location and/or race track, there are some that make the most of the days by starting at a different point than the last day.
Robert Voss, or otherwise known to many as ‘Camp Counselor Bob’, wanted to put his own spin on a drag and drive event after participating in several as a competitor. Today marked Day One on The Great American Detour, which will span over 3,000 miles and cover several states, all in the name of getting from New York to California in seven days!

With 21 years in the record books since the first drag and drive event at Hot Rod Drag Week in 2005, we’ve seen a variety of cars, engines and power adders as class winners, as well as overall champions.
Although the turbocharged entries have garnered the lion’s share of the titles, there are those that still subscribe to the ‘throttle in a bottle’ philosophy. And for only the fifth time in drag and drive history, and the first time since 2021, a nitrous car emerged in the top spot - at Motion Raceworks Sick Summer.
The Next Step of Street Race (Classes) – The 8.50-Second Based Sick Street Race and Street Race 275 Got a New Look at Motion Raceworks Sick Summer
When the Street Race class got its first refresh as part of the OG drag and drive event, Hot Rod Drag Week, in 2012, the 8.50-second threshold was never intended to be an index, a target, or a goal. Just a marker on roll cage limitations.
Since that time, the class structure has evolved to include different rulesets and ideals at different events, but the 8.50-second basis remains the same. And after changing the game on a few things in the drag and drive world with the first Sick Week in 2022, Sick The Magazine added a few more changes to the recent Sick Summer presented by Motion Raceworks event.

Pushing machines and man (as well as woman) to their limits on the drag strip can sometimes result in broken parts and shattered dreams. But in the case of drag and drive, it’s finding the balance between a quick time slip and being able to drive to the next track.
For three of the top five runners at Motion Raceworks Sick Summer, that was the case at the fourth stop at Great Lakes Dragaway. After a rain out at Tri-State on Wednesday, the fans once again poured into Great Lakes Dragaway, and they got to witness all the action, and carnage, before competitors licked their wounds and prepped for the final drive back to Byron, Illinois.

Day Zero means the majority of the day is competitors arriving at the track for the tech-in process, as well as Sick Ward and Sick Spit Show & Shine participants getting their bonuses and materials for the week. But there’s on track action as well, and the testing session provided some eye-opening results and competitors to keep an eye on leading into Day One of racing.
