The Peak Street Car Shootout Returns to NHRA National Event at Route 66 Raceway This May – Bailey, Taylor, Goldstone and Schroeder Among Competitors

The drag-and-drive scene continues to grow, with more events reaching out to the community to feature some of the competitors to make exhibition passes and/or display, it is a win-win situation.

Last year, the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) featured the drag-and-drive community at multiple events, and some of the quickest street-legal drag-and-drive rides have been invited to be part of the Gerber Collision & Glass Route 66 NHRA Nationals presented by PEAK Performance at Chicago’s Route 66 Raceway.

The first edition of the PEAK Street Car Shootout last year saw Bryant Goldstone’s AMC Javelin come out on top, and Bryant added multiple more event titles in 2023 on his way to a world championship.

So for 2024, Goldstone will return to defend his title at Route 66 with this year’s Sick Week Presented by Gear Vendors Overdrive-winning twin-turbo 6-second ride.

Goldstone’s biggest competition at PEAK Street Car Shootout last year was Alex Taylor, who clocked a trio of low 7-second passes to earn her way to the final round pairing. The Hot Rod Garage host will bring her ’55 Chevrolet back for another shot in Joliet.

“After having the chance to be a part of the NHRA national event at Route 66 Raceway last year for the Peak Street Car Shootout, we couldn’t wait to bring our 55 Chevy back again this year,” said Alex. “The NHRA team, the fans, and event environment were all top notch, and made for an unforgettable experience. We’ve had the chance to assemble a really great group of competitive drivers and cars that will give NHRA fans a glimpse of what our drag and drive world looks like - quick and fast street legal cars!”

Tom Bailey’s ‘Sick Seconds 2.0’ will also return to battle at this event, and to prepare for this year, Tom put together some ideas and changes for Bob Miller to execute to the Camaro to make some solid runs.

“It was such an awesome opportunity to be at the reopening of Route 66 Dragway last year,” said Tom. “We put on an amazing show, and were so appreciative of all the fan support. We are coming back with a group of great racers, and we have our sights set on showing all the fans what our street cars can do. I am personally looking to show everyone a 5-second quarter mile pass in a car that I drive to the track to race!”

The remainder of the eight-car field will be filled with some quick big-tire rides. Dave Schroder will represent for the nitrous faithful, and it’s rumored the new C7 Corvette that debuted at the PRI show will make an appearance.

A quartet of turbocharged rides will complete the list, including Nick Taylor and his recently revamped ‘Uncle Sam’ third-generation Camaro, Craig Groebner’s ’71 Chevy Nova, Tom McGilton’s ‘Why Not’ 2013 ZL1 Camaro, and Earl Schexnayder’s 2000 Ford Mustang.
