Persistent Rain Nullifies Racing at Mid-Michigan Motorplex on Day 2, but a Solid Day of Cruising and Exploring Michigan is the Result, as Sick Michigan Miles Heads to Northern Michigan Dragway
After a solid first day of competition on the Sick Michigan Miles Presented by Driven Racing Oil drag and drive event, and the drive from Milan to Stanton, Michigan complete, we caught rumblings of Mother Nature looking to rain on the activities on Day Two, August 12th, at Mid-Michigan Motorplex.
Despite the best efforts of the Ledford family to give us a solid surface, rain hit the track just minutes before we were about to call competitors to the staging lanes. So, instead cars and trucks were changed back to street mode, before visiting a trio of checkpoints over 191 miles.
Sick Michigan Miles Presented by Driven Racing Oil is underway - August 10-17th, 2025! The ‘all-business’ look of Chuck Marlett’s 1985 Chevrolet Camaro got some looks in the tech line, thinking this would be a serious contender. And a pass on Day One that started with a 1.19 60 foot also turned some heads. But a 6.79 at just 61 mph hit the scoreboard, and Marlatt offered an explanation.
“We just want to finish the week,” said Marlett. “We don’t need to rotate the earth.” This is Marlett’s second drag and drive event, as he participated in the Drop the Hammer event earlier this year.
You may have seen the ’69 Ford Mustang fastback of Jay Barnabei at Roadkill Nights, and he’s just outside the top ten with a 6.39 pass from Darana Dragway putting him eleventh in the standings. He was working on the car when racing was rained out for the day at Mid-Michigan.
It’s not unusual to see some good performances from Cadillac CTS-V models, but Brett McMillin takes it up a couple notches with his 2014 model. Featuring a gray chameleon wrap, McMillin clocked a 6.53 at 109 mph on Day One for a Top 20 spot. Did we mention it does great burnouts too?
Although it wasn’t an official checkpoint, Steve Morris Engines opened their shop for Michigan Miles participants to check out. Morris always has some interesting powerplants in the works, and this Noonan-based one got some eyeballs.
David Roberts is participating on Sick Michigan Miles in this ’57 Chevrolet that was originally owned by his dad. Under David’s ownership now, the classic Chevrolet sports a modern LS along with a 4L80 transmission, and produced an 8.03 pass on Monday.
The first stop of Day Two was C’s Ice Cream and Mini Golf, and the majority of the event participants grabbed some ice cream before hitting the road for checkpoint two. Shawn Halverson parked his ’70 Ford Maverick long enough to enjoy a treat before continuing his trek north.
Cody Worrall may have survived the wetness to hit all three checkpoints, but a few of the wheel studs and lug nuts from his rear wheels checked out before the day’s drive was complete. Luckily, he was able to locate a few spares, and got them swapped out to be able to race the ’78 Chevy El Camino at Northern Michigan Dragway.
After two days, Sick Michigan Miles will visit the third race track on the roster, Northern Michigan Dragway on Wednesday, August 13th, and you can join us!! Spectator tickets are available in advance for a discount on our website, or at the gate! CLICK HERE for more details for Sick Michigan Miles Presented by Driven Racing Oil!
