This is the second of five stories about Michigan, the track we’re visiting on that day, and showcasing the official shirt for each track that incorporates the track, as well as a Michigan business.
Day Two will take us northwest through the state to Stanton, Michigan and Mid-Michigan Motorplex. Originally opening in 1955 as Central Michigan Dragway at McBride Airport, the track saw action for thirteen years before closing in 1968.
Jim and Mary Ledford bought the track, renovated it and swung the gates open for business in 1975 under the same name as before, Central Michigan Dragway. In 1993, the Ledfords changed the track name to Mid-Michigan Motorplex, after the family made upgrades to the facility.
Racing under the World Drag Racing Alliance sanctioning body, Mid-Michigan Motorplex hosts races from April to October, including the Drop The Hammer Michigan and Heads Up Hustle drag and drive events, as well as the Pure Stock Muscle Car Drag Race.
When we tasked Sick The Mag staff artist Garrett Olsen with the limited-edition track shirts for Sick Michigan Miles, he tied in a Michigan-based business as well. For our second shirt, Olsen chose the popular Faygo beverage.
Getting its start in Detroit in 1907, the Faygo brand was created by Ben and Perry Feigenson. Originally known as the Feigenson Brothers Bottling Works, the name was changed to Faygo in 1921.
Introducing a diet version of their popular sodas in the 1960s, and later a non-carbonated line under the name Ohana, Faygo now offers over 50 flavors and is commonly available in the Midwestern, Mid-Atlantic, and Central Southern regions of the United States, as well as southern and western Canada.
