Dunphy Dominating Drag Week, as Numidia Takes Its Toll

Day two of Hot Rod Drag Week took over Numidia Dragway in Pennsylvania, with mixed fortunes on the track as the event unfolded.

The always-smiling Ned Dunphy had a reason to make his grin even bigger with a stunning 6.114/247 mph to bring his average to a 6.146. That has put Jeff Lutz’s all-time average drag and drive record of 6.16 well in sight.

After having to tear the engine apart to replace a piston and connecting rod yesterday, Graham Hayes made a 6.568 run (6.427A) to lead Ultimate Iron. On his lone run of the day, the Nova started to wheelie and required a quick pedal. Hayes remained second overall.

Bryant Goldstone arrived at Numidia late following some morning maintenance at the hotel before rolling to the track. Goldstone didn’t get a pass in until 2.17pm, with a 6.505 (6.583A) shot that was running out of fuel at the big end. He made a second attempt but the Corvette was sluggish and shook the tires off the line.

The Unlimited class lost David Schroeder overnight, as he decided to take his Corvette home to do some testing to cure the car of its tire shake issues.

Steve Spiess improved to a personal best 6.79 at 205 mph (6.819A), moving him into second in Unlimited Iron. David Armentrout also improved to a 6.851 (6.921A), keeping him on track for a six-second average.

Super Street Small Block Power Adder saw disaster strike leader David Diehl when he had a big braking area crash in his Mustang following a 7.06 run. The chutes failed to deploy and the car got crossed up, impacting the wall almost head on. David walked away from the wreck and Mike Jovanis stepped into the lead with his 7.694 average in the single turbo small-block Ford Mustang.

Pro Street Power Adder leader Nick Rinehart sacrificed three pushrods on yesterday’s street drive and made a single run on day two, bouncing the front end at the end of the run for a 7.15 at only 175 mph (7.138A).

Jeremiah Kirby and Scott Miller (above) are going toe-to-toe in Pro Street NA, with runs of 7.884 (7.883A) and 7.925 (7.935A) respectively.

Scott Glassbrook has moved to the top of Modified following Michael Ward’s withdrawal. An 8.428 (8.446A) has him looking strong to become the first four-cylinder to ever win the Modified class.

Sam Colalillo had the lead in Super Street Big Block Power Adder but after transmission troubles on the road left him without reverse or a transbrake, he dropped out. That moved the lead to Sean Lemire, competing in his first Drag Week, with an improved 8.662 at 163 mph.

In All Motor Big Block, Philip Tobin '93 Corvette is still the leader with an 8.449 average, while Glen Sheeley is holding on to the All Motor Small Block lead with an 8.370 average — world record pace.

An intense battle in Street Race Small Block Power Adder. Rick Steinke produced a near perfect 8.502 pass, then Randy Seward (above) answered with an 8.504! Their averages: 8.504 for Steinke, 8.505 for Seward!

A/Gas was a real battle with three cars in the eights today. Wayne Baker holds the lead as an 8.709 today resulted in an 8.911 average. Robby Wysoph improved to a strong 8.796 at 154 mph to stay second while Finnegan finally cured the wheelies (even though the wheels were dangling in third gear) to post an 8.890.

B/Gas leader Cody Helger suffered the second major incident of the day when his Chevy barrel-rolled through the braking area after getting loose on a pass, heavily damaging the '55 Chevy. Joseph Lang in his '51 Kaiser-Frazer assumed the lead.

The drive was much shorter than day one at 120 miles, with visits to checkpoints at Cabela’s and a railroad museum in Reading, PA.

Day three of Hot Rod Drag Week takes place at Maple Grove Raceway tomorrow! Check out the full results so far here and scroll down for more photos from the day. Remember to subscribe to Sick The Magazine for our awesome print coverage!
