For the Adventure – Laura Vanderhoof and Leslie Davis Will Pilot the Sick BBQ / Hot Dog / Ice Cream Truck on This Year’s Sick Summer Presented by Motion Raceworks
It’s become about as much of a staple at Sick The Magazine events as the familiar faces you see on our staff. But the Sick BBQ – Hot Dog – Ice Cream truck that started as a way to keep competitors fed at each track day, has also expanded into a new chapter: living the adventure pf a drag and drive and creating amazing memories for a two-person team.
When we put the call out for volunteers for Sick Summer Presented by Motion Raceworks, the e-mails poured in. And there were a lot of good ones. After considering all the options, it was determined that Laura Vanderhoof and Leslie Davis would take control of the uniquely familiar step van packing hot rod rollers, ice cream coolers, and of course, a nitrous bottle.
The start of summer - Sick Summer presented by Motion Raceworks, is coming up quick - June 14th-19th, 2026. Don’t miss your chance to join us in 3 states, at 4 tracks, for 5 days of sun and fun with hundreds of enthusiasts on a road trip and drag race that checks all the right boxes! “Piloting the Sick BBQ – Hot Dog – Ice Cream truck gives people a different experience of a drag and drive,” said Tom Bailey, creator of Sick The Magazine. The interactions you get with competitors and fans alike, plus the cool factor of driving something unique.”
For Laura and Leslie, being selected for this experience is a major win on several fronts, starting with the support of their husbands, Devin Vanderhoof and Josh Davis, who will be competing at Sick Summer. One year ago, the friends decided to experience a drag and drive as part of Sick Ward for the 2025 edition of Sick Summer.
“One of the reasons why this (driving the Sick BBQ – Hot Dog – Ice Cream truck) is extra cool is because we don’t always get to go to these types of events with our husbands,” said Laura. “We have to be home with the dogs, or in Leslie’s case with her son. So, we watch from the sidelines, on the TV, the live stream, or whatever the case may be.”
Despite Devin and Josh’s early exit from the Sick Summer Presented by Motion Raceworks in 2025, Laura and Leslie convinced them to join them for Sick Ward and a few days of fun before getting back to South Carolina. She covered the adventure in a guest editorial, ‘The Week That Wasn’t,’ for Sick The Magazine’s print issue.
“The fact that we’ll be able to be there in person, even though working, to be able to support and cheer on our husbands while physically present is a huge deal for us,” said Laura. “I think it adds to more of the excitement if you will.”
For those that submitted an entry but were not picked for Sick Summer, we also need a two-person team for Sick Michigan Miles (August 17th – 23rd, 2026) and Sick 66 (September 26th - October 3rd, 2026. If you’d like to apply, send us an e-mail to info@sickthemagazine.com
