Editorial: The Street Race Class Needs to Pay Attention

One of the most popular classes in drag-and-drive is Street Race, a heavily restricted category that has become a de facto 8.50 index class.

Pioneered by Hot Rod Drag Week, Street Race was envisioned as a place for stock body, interior and suspension cars to run their hardest. The class boomed through the 2010s as it became known for extremely close competition, with results typically decided by thousandths of a second. The Sick Street Race and Street Race 275 classes in the Sick rulebook have become places where perfection is mandatory if you want to win!

With a racer base high in both quality and quantity, Street Race is one of the most exciting places to be in drag-and-drive, but the category also allows crossover into some pretty neat class racing too, the likes of which will be showcased at Sick On The Green, May 29-31 at Beech Bend Raceway Park.

In total (and assuming compliance with rules such as tire size), a Street Race class will be able to compete in three different categories at Sick On The Green: Street Race 8.60, Lil Gangstas and the Sick Street Car Challenge. Triple-entering would certainly be a torture test for sure, but given the way we have seen some participants hot-lap in the past, it’s not impossible. Assuming you can make the laps and get the win lights, one racer could hypothetically walk away with $15,000 —  here’s how.

Let’s start with the Sick Street Car Challenge where the Street Race (5.35 or Above) category awards $1000 to the racer with the closest average to 5.35 on the eighth-mile. That’s a good start! Moving on to the Street Race 8.60 Index eliminations class and there is another $1500 available to the winner (with a total $3,500 pay out across the class). But the big money can be found in Lil Gangstas.

With its 5.30 index, Lil Gangstas is perfect for the Street Race class. Friday eliminations will be a 100% pay out with a $200 buy-in, so let’s call it $3200 if there’s 16 cars on the property, though it’s highly likely there could be more. Saturday ramps things up with $10,000 to win, meaning that if a single racer can win all of the above classes, they could leave Sick On The Green with $15,700 in their pocket!

So if you’ve got a Street Race drag-and-drive car and you’ve been looking for new places to race and have fun, you need to be coming to Sick On The Green. Discount online pre-entries are now available. Entries are also available on the day at the gate for an added cost.
