Bradenton Motorsports Park is hosting the 52nd Annual Snowbird Outlaw Nationals November 30th through December 3rd, and testing this week has resulted in the quickest quarter-mile pass for a door car changing hands.

Although it seems there are plenty Coyote-swapped, Terminator-swapped and LS-swapped Mustang, in the case of Mike Cataline, he’s a dyed-in-the-wool pushrod blue oval man, and this 1987 Mustang is a car he’s been refining for nearly a quarter-century.

“I originally bought the 4-door Nova only for the fenders to use on the car in the body shop. But I got it, then discovered it was a 40,000-survivor car, and I couldn’t bring myself to dismantle it.”

Sick the Magazine all started with the print magazine - in a time when more companies and magazines are going away from print format, Tom Bailey listened to the people and knew the drag-and-drive community deserved more. “We pack a ton of great things in each and every issue. Event coverage, full blown features, staff and guest columns, and a TON of photos packed in.”

“I got bored with having to trailer the car to the track. I decided if I was going to have a fast car, it needed to be able to drive to the track.”

What were / Who is the “Sickest of the Sick” from the 2023 season in your opinion?

Mike Verdolotti has owned this fourth-generation F-body since age 17, and it will be his weapon of choice for his first drag-and-drive event: the 2024 edition of Sick Week Presented by Gear Vendors Overdrive.

“The new C7 Corvette will require a bunch of passes before we put it in any competition. So, we decided to run the ’66 Corvette in Sick Week presented by Gear Vendors Overdrive for 2024.

While small tire racing has made some serious strides in drag racing as a whole, the drag-and-drive community raised the small tire bar to a whole new level in 2023.

“I love the challenge of the drag-and-drive events. I find them a test of your ability to build a car to survive, and go fast at the same time.”

“At one point we thought it might not be done in time for the Performance and Racing Industry (PRI) show, but it will be there.”

But despite the drag-and-drive and most big events being in the books for 2023, Brett LaSala and the Real Street group have pushed on, testing and finding gains at their hometown track, Orlando Speed World Dragway.

“Drag-and-drive events appeal to me because they are the ultimate challenge for man and machine. They are also the closest group of friends that are really complete strangers.”

This clean 1976 Trans Am checks all the boxes in the ‘Special Edition’ black and gold appearance. But in track mode, the Pontiac-powered ride shines with the performance many wish the factory model could’ve had.

“I really want to prove that my car can do a drag and drive event and be competitive. Depending on how Sick Week goes, there is always a chance to participate in Hot Rod Drag Week as well.”

With 2024 just around the corner, and with it - Sick Week Presented by Gear Vendors Overdrive - Sick the Magazine has released a schedule of events we will be hosting, as well as a few more we will be in attendance at.

The eighth-mile based 235-tire (26-inch-tall x 8.5-inch-width) classes moved to another level in the 2023 season, and several racers are taking the off-season to refine or update their program for better times in 2024.

After debuting earlier this year at Thunder Valley Raceway in Oklahoma, King Of The Open Road visited Tucson Dragway in Tucson, Arizona in September, and now heads for Texas Motorplex for the finale!
