Return of Drag Week Legend Lutz Highlights Testing

Jeff Lutz led testing results for Hot Rod Drag Week 2025 with a flying 5.91 at just 222 mph on Sunday at Maryland International Raceway.

Lutz, attending his first Drag Week since 2016, seemed to have overcome the connecting rod issues that affected the team both at Sick Week 2025 Presented By Gear Vendors Overdrive and Sick At The Rock.

“The run was good, it lifted about 700 feet because it was starting to lay over,” he said. “Now we’ve just got to do it five times.”

The Unlimited class is looking strong this year, with Ned Dunphy also running well in testing on the back of a 6.10 pass. Canadian Dave Schroeder made a couple of early shut-off hits in his Corvette without seeing the numbers he wanted.

Bryant Goldstone has elected to put his new Corvette through its paces. A shaking 6.6-second pass was the best he could put on the timing boards, which was followed by a trip into the gravel trap when the chutes failed.

David Diehl impressed on radial tires, giving Super Street something to talk about with a stunning 6.86 pass following his all-six-second week at Motion Raceworks Sick Summer.

While we will need to wait until tomorrow for the final count of total entry numbers, we’re expecting to see somewhere over the 400 mark. Hot Rod Drag Week has traditionally allowed people to turn up on the day and get a place to race if there is enough room, but the strong rumor today was that this may be the first year someone is turned away.

Racing begins tomorrow from 9am at Maryland International Raceway before the field heads to Numidia Dragway in Pennsylvania. The first day of the week is the longest drive at 234 miles.
