Second Day of Testing at the Mickey Thompson Turn & Burn Provides Big Numbers and Some Familiar Rides Hit Summit Motorsports Park to Prepare for Day One of the Drag and Drive Part of The Event!

It started as an idea to expand on Mickey Thompson’s ‘Try and Buy’ program that is done at select times across the US, and ultimately became the combination of tire testing and a first-time drag and drive event for Mickey Thompson and Summit Motorsports Park.

The Turn & Burn overcame Mother Nature’s wrath on Tuesday for a solid day of testing on Wednesday at the Norwalk, Ohio track, ground zero for the three day drag and drive that gets underway today.

We’re less than 2 months away from the start of summer - Sick Summer presented by Motion Raceworks that is. Three states, five days, four tracks, hundreds of enthusiasts on a road trip and drag race that clicks all the right boxes! Jeff Lutz recently made a change to his engine program in the familiar yellow ’69 Chevrolet Camaro. The multi-time Hot Rod Drag Week champ and former record holder moved to a Noonan engine-based HEMI program, and Lutz carded a 6.04 at 210 mph before encountering tire shake on his final two runs of the day.

Alex Taylor rolled into Norwalk with her proven ’55 Chevy, and laid down a solid 6.69 at 218 mph right off the trailer. It gave Alex a smile, and some additional time to help out husband Nick Taylor with his return to the drag and drive scene with the ‘Uncle Sam’ Camaro.

After about a year away from the scene, Nick made the recent move from a LS combination to a big block Chevrolet engine platform. Taking the majority of the day to button up some last-minute details, Nick hit the track for a pair of shakedown runs on the new combination, ultimately settling for a half-track blast and rolling through the quarter mile for a 7.76 at 139 mph.

Shaun Skipper blasted into the drag and drive scene at the 2025 edition of Sick Week presented by Gear Vendors Overdrive, getting his 1954 Corvette through the week with high 7-second performances. He cranked the knobs up a bit yesterday, clocking a pair of 7.0-second performances, the best being a 7.00 at 200 mph.

Steve and Val Morris are bringing a 1-2 punch to Turn & Burn, as Val is competing with the Sick Week-winning 2010 Camaro, and Steve wheeling the familiar ‘Boostmaster’ station wagon. The wagon made the switch to radials this year, and Steve battled wheelie problems on the test day. Val made a single shot, lighting the scoreboard with a 7.34 at just 157 mph, one of the quickest radial passes of the day.

Official competition for the drag and drive portion of the event begins today, with on track action until 2 pm before competitors turn in their best time slip and switch to street miles toward their destination, Mansfield, Ohio and The Ohio State Reformatory.

We’ll have more coverage throughout the next three days on our social media channels, as well as the Sick The Magazine website.
