Bryant Goldstone Remains Overall Leader, Alex Taylor Bounces Back, The Diehls Continue Their 6-Second Path, and a Packed House Highlights Great Lakes Dragaway on Day 2 of Sick Summer

Day Two of Sick Summer Presented By Motion Raceworks would prove to be just as hot as the first, in both temperature in the air and action on the race track.

The crowds have always been massive at Great Lakes Dragaway, and the drag and drive faithful would once again flock to Wisconsin for all the action on track, along the drive, and at the checkpoints.

Bryant Goldstone dialed up another ‘one-and-done’ for Day Two, as his AMC Javelin nearly repeated the 6.60 from Day One with a 6.61 at 219 mph to hold the top spot in Ultimate Iron for the second-straight day.

While Goldstone played the ‘second verse same as the first’ idea to perfection, Alex Taylor and Steve Morris turned up their rides for a better performance on day two. After an off-pace day one for Taylor, she found her groove with a 6.72 at 217 mph in the ’55 Chevy that got her and father Dennis on the road early. Morris struggled on his first two runs, but found the 6-second range on the third with a 6.80 at 211 mph blast to stay second behind Goldstone.

The Diehl brothers race more than just drag and drive-type events, and Nick Diehl tries to put that data to use to push their 2001 Mustang to better performances on multiple fronts. Nick demanded another 6-second pass in their tune up, and brother David delivered a 6.96 at 207 mph in Wisconsin to retain their lead in the Super Street class over Doug Cook.

Cook clocked a second-straight 7.25 run to keep his ’72 Chevy Nova in the second spot, but rumors of thrashing on the car for a second night to make it to Cordova Dragway for Day Three have us wondering if the defending class champ is on the ropes.

Nick Cryer stayed in front of the Ultimate class with a 7.33 at 192 mph clocking from his wild ’33 Ford, Clark Rosenstengel continues to lead the Heavy Metal class with a 7.40 at 201 mph blast, Bob Gruber held his spot in Stick Shift with another 8.8-second performance, and Ken Cuttle Jr. kept the show worthy ’70 Chevelle at the held of the Naturally Aspirated pack.

Luis DeLeon continued to lead the small tire players with a 4.83 at 136 mph pass in Rowdy Radial, with Tanner Stover keeping his ’68 Chevelle in second with a 5.16 at 151 mph the best pass of three attempts.

Mike McMahon tried to play musical chairs with Jeremy Ortiz in the 8.50-second capped Street Race 275 class with a solid 8.507 run in his ‘Pimp Money’ Mustang, but Ortiz answered with an 8.507 of his own to retain the number one spot by a narrow six thousandths of-a-second.

The battle in Sick Street Race also stayed as warm as the weather, as Brian Acton needed a few runs before an 8.521 would do the deed for an 8.516 average and staying top dog over Cameron Alley and Randy Belehar, who swapped the second and third spots, but are less than two hundredths of-a-second behind Acton in the standings.

The Pro DYO (Dial Your Own) and DYO classes would be a matter of mere thousandths between days One and Two. Erik Wiegand’s 1966 Pontiac Lemans varied by just four thousandths for the early lead in Pro DYO, while Tim Grabiak only changed performance by a mere thousandth from Byron Dragway to Great Lakes Dragaway for the DYO helm.

The Cleetus McFarland ‘Cheap Car Challenge’ saw all competitors grab a 9-second time slip from Great Lakes Dragaway, but the ‘G-Money’ Camaro with Bailey at the helm did the best with a 9.09 at 151 mph blast.

After a trio of checkpoints, a LOT of trailer burnouts, and a visit to Motion Raceworks headquarters to wrap up Day Two, we roll into Day Three activities on Sick Summer Presented by Motion Raceworks back in Illinois at Cordova Dragway. The FRDM+ team will once again stream the day’s action.
