We Have Liftoff – Rocket City Dragway Hosts One of The Quickest Days of Eighth-Mile Drag and Drive Competition, as Edelbrock Sick Smokies Completes Day One of Competition
The concept of a drag and drive is an easy one – to survive the tracks AND the street drives, in order to successfully complete the event. But the competition side has been heating up over the last few years as well, as more new cars are being built to quicken the pace in certain classes and/or events.
The Edelbrock Sick Smokies marks the first time a drag and drive event has made a serious push for a large contingent of Gassers, and that call to action was answered by more than 40 entries. Combined with nearly 200 additional entries teched outside the Gassers, Edelbrock Sick Smokies marks the largest ‘one off’ Sick The Magazine drag and drive event in our three-year history.

A sunny and warm day at Rocket City Dragway provided the basis for Day Zero of Edelbrock Sick Smokies, as over 200 cars and trucks were teched in and given some testing time on the drag strip.
A diverse field of entries from across the US and Canada came together in the staging lanes, and we got to witness some stellar runs, and some familiar faces dropped some solid elapsed times during the test and tune on Day Zero.
‘Garbage That Barfed’ Gasser Looks to Dominate the B/Gas Field at Next Week’s Edelbrock Sick Smokies!
Nearly a decade after acquiring a name that some might have questioned, Matt Donovan has rolled into the double-digit number of drag and drive events he’s attended with a 1938 Chevrolet coupe.
Granted, the original ‘Garbage That Barfed’ 1941 Pontiac was upgraded to the current ’38 Chevrolet, but the spirit remains. And in addition to completing the unique Edelbrock Sick Smokies event, Donovan hopes to check off some personal goals.
Editorial: The Grudge Race That Stopped a Nation
If ever there was a grudge race had the perfect narrative elements, this was it. There was a hero — Garrett Mitchell with his huge social media following — and there was a villain. Joel Grannas probably didn’t intend to fill that role before FL2K, but when he missed a lane call and went on Facebook to vent, the internet was not kind.
Skill Set – Tim Irwin Puts His Spin on a Gasser-Themed Chevy II That Will Debut At Edelbrock Sick Smokies Next Week!
Working in the performance industry has its perks, and one of those is getting lots of ideas for either a current or new project. In the case of Tim Irwin, who has over fifty years in the racing world, he needs to looks no further than the racing community and his current employer, Moser Engineering.
Irwin has owned and built some cool rides, including Gassers. “I’ve been a chassis builder for most of my working life, and know what it takes to build a competitive car,” Irwin said. That has played into his interest, as well as a car, for the quickly-approaching Edelbrock Sick Smokies event.
The Ways of a Willys – Dean Trowbridge Scratched the Gasser Itch with a Classic Willys; Now He Takes the Next Step to See If Man and Machine Can Survive Edelbrock Sick Smokies!
Some of us get a first or second car that resonates with us, sometimes enough to retain ownership, or the desire to have a similar model for the long haul.
But there are other enthusiasts that have to ‘pay their dues’ and bust their tail to get that car and/or the performance they have been picturing in their life. That was the case with Dean Trowbridge, who will join us for Edelbrock Sick Smokies and his first drag and drive with this Willys Gasser.
Cementing His Legacy – After Seven Years with a ’63 Ford Galaxie, Bobby Frizzell Will Add Another Chapter to This Gasser’s Storyline by Competing at the Edelbrock Sick Smokies Event This October!
Some classic rides enjoy a lengthy ownership under the individual that originally purchased them, and in the case of this ’63 Ford Galaxie 500, it was also raced not long as after leaving the dealership.
After more than five decades of ownership, The Galaxie changed hands in 2018 to a new owner, Bobby Frizzell. He has continued to exercise the car on the track, and will add in the street element in a couple weeks when he embarks on Edelbrock Sick Smokies.

Almost every car has a story to tell, whether it has a long family history, or a special day such as being driven to a wedding.
For Jeremy Bonnett, racing and the love of automobiles and motorcycles has spilled into not only time spent with his family, but also in building cars at their home shop. They created a couple that have seen time in the drag and drive community.
The latest one, this ’33 Willys named ‘Last Penny’ was finished in 2024, and Jeremy will join 70-plus Gassers to go for a second drag and drive event win at next month’s Edelbrock Sick Smokies!

With time spent in the automotive performance industry, as well as a good amount of time spent drag racing, it’s fair to say that Greg Overman is an enthusiast.
But when one of his friends participated in a Sick The Mag drag and drive event, it would set in motion a small group of friends attending the Edelbrock Sick 66 event in 2024.
That same group of friends will embark on another drag and drive adventure together, as set their sights on the Edelbrock Sick Smokies event, October 12-19th, 2025 .
Sick The Magazine’s first “one off” event in 2023, Death Week, put the competitors through three states, four different race tracks, and over 2,000 miles street miles. One of those competitors was Daniel Roberts with his stick shift 1996 Ford Mustang, and his adventure would lead to a yearly adventure for Roberts, Overman and a few others.

This unique Henry J is not the first one that Troy Lightner has owned, but represents his dive back into racing after taking a few years away from the sport.
Lightner made his first trip to a drag strip with his brother when he was fourteen years old, and the racing bug bit down hard. “I have been involved in drag racing since 1964,” said Rightner. That level of commitment usually means building a car, and Rightner was no exception.

Just How Quick Are The Quickest Street Cars – Sick The Magazine Breaks Down the Top Ten Single Runs in Drag and Drive History
There plenty of ways to start an argument on social media, and one of the easiest questions to start with is “what is a street car?” Get the popcorn and set aside some time, as some believe air conditioning, cruise control and lack of a roll cage are requirements.
Not far behind the “what makes it a street car” question is “what is a fast / quick street car?” Granted fast and quick are different measurements, and for this story, we’ll focus on the elapsed time “quick” side.
Following the performances we’ve seen on the jam-packed 2025 schedule of drag and drive events, one could be forgiven for looking back at past year results and wonder just how quickly the cars and drivers have advanced.

A lot has happened in the twenty-one years of competition of drag-and-drive since Hot Rod Drag Week got the train rolling in 2005.
On that first year, Carl Scott averaged an 8.581 at 157.13 mph after five days and over 1,000 street miles, and the community has expanded, more events added, and the averages continue to improve over the next 2 decades.
Ned Dunphy’s winning average at the recently-completed Hot Rod Drag Week, a 6.175-second performance, takes the top spot from Jeff Lutz, who held it for nine years!
That got our minds chugging – just how quick are the best ten averages in drag and drive history?
Dunphy Makes Drag And Drive History

There are those that decide to do this a little bit different, even if at first glance it doesn’t appear as such.
Although this 1966 Ford Mustang may appear to be a clean example of a Gasser build upon an initial inspection, the classic Ford hides a few secrets that will be on display as part of the 70-plus Gassers at the Edelbrock Sick Smokies event October 12th through the 19th.
A former street racer, Russell Grimes has turned to racing on the drag strip more in the last fifteen years, and decided to take on a new build. “While I was building a customer’s car, I decided to build a 60's themed drag car and here we are,” said Grimes.
